There is a very interesting exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna. It is called "China - Facing Reality".
As china being a topic of many discussions around world economy, the name leaves various interpretations open. Is it the artists that more and more face reality since the country has open upt o the world? Or is it China as a country that has to face all the problems that go with such a rapid development from a more or less third world country to an industrial nation?
Anyway, the exhibition is a must see when you are near Vienna.

Momentan findet im Museum für Moderne Kunst in Wien eine sehr interessante Ausstellung statt. Sie heißt "China - Facing Reality".
Da China momentan wohl DAS Thema in allen Diskussionen rund um die Weltwirtschaft ist, lässt dieser Name mehrere Interpretationen offen. Sehen hier nun die Künstler der Realität ins Auge sehen nach dem sich das Land der Welt geöffnet hat? Oder ist es China als Land welches nun all den Problemen ins Auge sehen muss, die mit so einer rasenden Entwicklung vom mehr oder weniger Dritte Welt Land zu einer Industrienation einhergehen?
Wie auch immer, die Ausstellung ist ein Muß, wenn man in der Nähe von Wien ist!

Every year there is a competition called Brand New Award, where young designers get the chance to present their labels on this fair. Kat Heyes &hearts

Kat Heyes actually started studying fashion design at the St Martins College of Art and Design in London. But before graduating she realized it was not the right thing for her. Encouraged by the great Julie Verhoeven Kate did her first comission as an illustrator for no one less than GUCCI. Well that's a good way to start your career.
Now Kat is living her dreamlive while working at her own studio by the sea. *sigh*

Kat Heyes hat urspünglich ein Modedesignstudium am St.Martins College of Art and Design begonnen. Noch vor ihrem Diplom musste sie sich aber eingestehen, dass dies gar nicht ihre Welt ist. Ermutigt von der großartigen Julie Verhoeven nahm Kat ihren ersten Auftrag als Illustratorin an - für keine geringere Firma als GUCCI. Das nenne ich doch mal einen guten Weg seine Karriere zu beginnen. Seitdem lebt Kat ihren Traum und arbeitet als Illustratorin in ihrem Studio am Meer. *seufz*

1. POSTSECRET
This is not a blog in the usual sense (what is usual anyways). Everyone can send a selfmade postcard to Frank, who started this website. On that postcard people write down their most treasured secret. These confessions make me sad and sometimes laugh - mostly of embarrassment. But also they make me think.

Dies ist kein gewöhnlicher Blog (aber was ist schon gewöhnlich). Jeder kann Frank, der diese Website eingerichtet hat, eine selbstgebastelte Postkarte schicken. Auf dieser Postkarte geben die Menschen dann ihr bestgehütetes Geheimnis preis. Diese Geständnisse machen mal traurig, mal bringen sie mich zum Lachen - allerdings meist vor lauter Peinlichkeit. Aber sie stimmen auch nachdenklich.

2. BOOK BY ITS COVER
They say, reading makes you smarter. So maybe looking at very beautiful books will also help. A little at least.

Es heißt doch lesen bildet. Vielleicht hilft ja auch das einfache Anschauen von wunderschönene Büchern. Ein wenig zumindest.

3. FACES IN PLACES
To discover faces in places you have to slow down in your daily routine. AND it stimulates your fantasy!

Um Gesichter in Dingen zu entdecken muss man sein Tempo mal verlangsamen. Es regt die außerdem Fantasie an!

Mahrets blog was the first one I started reading (on a regular base) and I found out about it via this picture at Stil in Berlin. Shortly after I decided to start my own blog.

Your work is made of paper. Why have you chosen for this material? Deine Arbeiten sind alle aus Papier. Wieso hast Du Dich für dieses Material entschieden?
Art first, paper was only the material to make the prototypes and models of. It was the best material to work out my ideas. But then I was really fascinated by the material behaviour and the charisma and I knew: there will be no other material who can work that way. Paper is fragile and robust at the same time – it is very patient but it also as some restrictions to it. People kept asking me what material I am going to choose to make the 'real thing' of, but the more models I was making, the more I realised it could only be paper. In the end it is an autonomous material. I worked out my designs so precisely that any question about another material will be redundant: this can definitely only be done with paper.

Zunächst diente Papier mir nur als Material für Modelle, weil es am besten meine Formsprache zum Ausdruck brachte. Bei einigen Modellen war ich jedoch so fasziniert vom Materialverhalten und der Ausstrahlung, dass ich wusste es gibt einfach kein anderes Material, was sich auf genau diese Art und Weise verhält und das Papier ersetzten oder die Modelle verbessern kann. Papier ist sehr fragil und robust zugleich. Es ist geduldig aber lässt auch nicht alles mit sich machen. Immer wieder bekam ich die Frage gestellt aus welchem Material meine Entwürfe letztendlich gefertigt werden sollten und je mehr Modelle ich machte, desto mehr merkte ich dass Papier doch auch ein selbstständiges Material ist. Letzendlich sind meine Entwürfe so präzise in Papier ausgearbeitet, das jede Frage nach einem anderen Material überflüssig erscheint: meine Entwürfe können nur in Papier ausgearbeitet werden.


How is your design process going on, how do you start with new designs?
Wie geht dein Designprozess voran, wie beginnst Du einen neuen Entwurf?
I begin every design with a rough sketch in my head – it is sometimes only a feeling about the new designs. I have an diffuse conception of the look, or a story I want to tell. Then I quickly begin working in a three dimensional way – I sculpture the paper around the body or work out some details. This is in the beginning very chaotic an only a mere scribble. With the help of a constructional computer programm i work out the patterns. This is also helpful to save myself of my own looseness. By using a computer I also come across possibillities or solutions that were not predictable.

Der Entwurf beginnt mit einer Skizze im Kopf, meist nur einem Gefühl bezüglich der neuen Entwürfe. Ich habe dann eine schemenhafte Vorstellung wie etwas aussehen soll, aber vor allem was es vermitteln soll, was es für eine Geschichte erzählt werden soll. Ich arbeite dann meistens direkt drei dimensional, mache viele Modelle aus Papier am Körper, probiere Details aus. Das ist zunächst sehr skizzenhaft und chaotisch. Mithilfe eine Konstruktionsprogramms entwickle ich am Computer die Schnittmuster - auch um mich vor meiner eigenen Ungenauigkeit zu bewahren. Im Computer stoße ich aber auch auf Möglichkeiten oder Lösungen, die eher unvorhersehbar sind.


What inspires you, what was the initial point for your final collection? Was inspiriert Dich, was war der Ausgangspunkt für Deine Abschlusskollektion?
My everlasting source of inspiration is the City and its people: how they act and react, how the architecture works on them and the other way round. It is about the flippancy, the momentariness or substitutability that surround us: images, trends, and faces of people and places not only in the real but also in the virtual world (myspace, youtube, second life ect). Especially that was also my starting point for the final collection: the variable image as a very fragile shell that is supposed to give us some protection, make us bigger, better or more special, even if it is just for one moment.

Meine stetige Inspirationsquelle ist die Stadt, die Menschen die darin leben: wie sie agieren und reagieren, wie Architektur auf uns wirkt und umgekehrt. Es geht dabei um die Flüchtigkeit, die Vergänglichkeit oder Ersetzbarkeit, die uns umgibt: Imagos, Trends, Gesichter von Menschen und Orten nicht nur in den greifbaren, sondern vor allem in virtuellen Welten wie dem Internet (myspace, youtube, secondlife etc.). Vor allem das war der Ausgangspunkt für meine Abschlussarbeit: das variable Imago als zerbrechliche Hülle, die Schutz bieten soll und größer, besser oder besonderer machen soll, auch sei es für nur einen Moment.


What are your plans for the future? Was sind Deine Pläne für die Zukunft?
Potentially I will do a master study, but only when I come accross the right academy (and enough money). In the meantime I want to enhance myself and to do projects with other people. People from the field of design, but more likely people from the theatre or film, architecture or technology.
I basically will be working in two directions. On the on hand I will continue working on an experimental basis. That means in the first place to further develop my current collection – especially when it comes to presentation. There are so many posibilities to make my collection more understandable or maybe more vivid. I could imagine to cooperate with someone to write a script based on my designs.
On the other hand I want to design a collection of wearable accessories based on my papercollection. Wether in collaboration with a fashion designer or on my own remains to be seen.
All these thing will resolve in the nearby future. What I do know is that I am going crazy if I cannot be productive.

Eventuell werde ich ein Masterstudium machen, aber nur wenn ich die richtige Akademie (und Geld) dafür gefunden habe. Erstmal will ich versuchen mich selbstständig weiter zu entwickeln und Projekte mit verschiedenen Leuten zu machen. Das können Personen aus dem Designbereich aber vor allem auch Theater, Film, Architektur oder Technologie sein. Ich möchte mit meiner Arbeit zwei Richtungen ausarbeiten. Einerseits die eher experimentelle, wobei ich meine jetzige Kollektion weiterentwickeln will - vor allem was die Präsentation angeht. Da gibt es noch sehr viele Möglichkeiten sie verständlicher, aber vielleicht auch lebendiger zu machen. Ich könnte mir zum Beispiel vorstellen mit jemandem zusammen ein Szenario zu schreiben das ausgeht von meinen Entwürfen. Zugleich will ich auch eine tragbare Kollektion Modeaccessoires entwerfen, der meine Papierkollektion zugrunde liegt. Ob das jetzt in Form einer Zusammenarbeit mit einer Modedesignerin oder selbstständig geschieht, wird sich zeigen.
Genaues wird sich in der nächsten Zeit herausstellen. Was ich mittlerweile jedoch sicher weiß, ist, dass ich den Verstand verliere, wenn ich nicht produktiv sein kann.

ART.FAIR.21

Well well...unfortunately, the Art.Fair.21 was not worth the money. I had not so much to do with what was exhibited, but more of the way it was exhibited. First the atmosphere (the light) was horrible - too glaring. Second there was no structure - at least I did not recognize any. On the small brochure/map there were only the names of the galleries given - you had to be an insider. In the booths themselves there was hardly any written information on the exhibited pieces. Sometimes there were books of the artists, but all in all it was just not accessible enough for a public fair. I expected more of an exhibition than the atmosphere of a classic fair.
Of course there were some pieces that caught our attention anyway and I have already been busy with collecting some more information to show you some things in the next weeks.
One highlight was the special exhibition on the International Photography Awards by Pilsener Urquell. More of it soon...

Nun...ich muss leider sagen, die Art.Fair.21 war ihr Geld nicht wert. Es lag weniger an dem, was ausgestellt wurde, als an der Art wie es ausgestellt wurde. Erstens: Das Licht war zu grell - die Atmosphere war dadurch schrecklich. Zweitens gab es keine für mich erkennbare Strukutur. Auf dem Messeplan waren nur die Namen der Galerien angegeben- da musste man sich schon auskennen. Auf den Messeständen selber gab es dann auch nur enttäuschend wenig Information in der Form von Text über die ausgestellten Stücke. Es lagen zwar manchmal Bücher aus, aber alles in allem war es einfach nicht zugänglich genug für eine öffentliche Messe. Ich hatte etwas mehr Ausstellung erwartet und etwas weniger Messe.
Natürlich gab es trotzdem Werke, die sehr interessant waren und ich sammle schon fleißig Informationen um hier in den nächsten Wochen etwas zu zeigen.
Ein Highlight war allerdings die Sonderausstellung zum International Photography Award von Pilsener Urquell. Demnächst mehr davon...

...is a magazine about Fashion & Music from Austria... A lot of lesser known lables are presented, there are good reviews on Fashion shows and interviews with bands. A big plus: it only costs 5€ and contains just a few ads. As the name says: it is an independent fashion magazine. Besides it is interesting for man and women.

...ist ein Magazin aus Österreich über Mode & Musik... Viele unbekanntere Labels werden präsentiert und es gibt gute Reviews von Fashion Shows und Interviews mit diversen Bands. Ein großes Plus: kostet nur 5€ und enthält wenig Anzeigen. Wie der Name schon sagt: ein unabhängiges Modemagazin. Außerdem ist es für Männer und Frauen.
