Zelda Beauchampet

The well known computer classic 'The legend of Zelda' was definitely not the inspiration for her name, because the dutch designer 'Zelda Beauchampet' was born seven years before in Utrecht.
Nowadays, Zelda is working in her studio in Eindhoven as a freelance designer for multiple sources. Next to her freelance career she runs several self initiated projects with a strong focus on graphic, fashion and jewellery design. More about Zelda and about her current jewelery project 'handscape' can be seen here:

go play

Some time ago I already told you, I'm not really into goods made out of recycled things. But what I am really into is colourful plastic stuff. And if that colourful plastic stuff happens to be recycled - I am all for it!
Martine Camillieri, a french artists almost only works with colourful plastics. It is not always about recycling , but always about giving things another meaning. The toy cars caught my eye at Colette's online store, but be sure to take some time to check out the artists other projects on her website. It is such a happy, playful world she establishes. And to my pleasure there are also some food related projects.
//

COM-PA-NY

COM-PA-NY from Finland are AAMU SONG & JOHAN OLIN. The duo designs products with humor and irony and they are inspired by everyday observations. They work in all fields of design - graphic, product or fashion design. It is obvious what inspires them most: their home country Finland. A lot of products are especially designed to revive old (and almost forgotten) finnish handcrafting traditions. There was even an exhibition on this topic called 'Top Secrets of Finland' which was held at the KIASMA, the Museum for Contemporary Art in Helsinki.

love the moment

An interview with Magda Malina, who graduated this year from the Academy of Arts in Arnhem, NL, with a collection of fashion accessory out of the ordinary.
//

Your work is made of paper. Why have you chosen for this material?
Art first, paper was only the material to make the prototypes and models of. It was the best material to work out my ideas. But then I was really fascinated by the material behaviour and the charisma and I knew: there will be no other material who can work that way. Paper is fragile and robust at the same time – it is very patient but it also as some restrictions to it. People kept asking me what material I am going to choose to make the 'real thing' of, but the more models I was making, the more I realised it could only be paper. In the end it is an autonomous material. I worked out my designs so precisely that any question about another material will be redundant: this can definitely only be done with paper.
//

How is your design process going on, how do you start with new designs?

I begin every design with a rough sketch in my head – it is sometimes only a feeling about the new designs. I have an diffuse conception of the look, or a story I want to tell. Then I quickly begin working in a three dimensional way – I sculpture the paper around the body or work out some details. This is in the beginning very chaotic an only a mere scribble. With the help of a constructional computer programm i work out the patterns. This is also helpful to save myself of my own looseness. By using a computer I also come across possibillities or solutions that were not predictable.
//

What inspires you, what was the initial point for your final collection? Was inspiriert Dich, was war der Ausgangspunkt für Deine Abschlusskollektion?
My everlasting source of inspiration is the City and its people: how they act and react, how the architecture works on them and the other way round. It is about the flippancy, the momentariness or substitutability that surround us: images, trends, and faces of people and places not only in the real but also in the virtual world (myspace, youtube, second life ect). Especially that was also my starting point for the final collection: the variable image as a very fragile shell that is supposed to give us some protection, make us bigger, better or more special, even if it is just for one moment.
//

What are your plans for the future? Was sind Deine Pläne für die Zukunft?
Potentially I will do a master study, but only when I come accross the right academy (and enough money). In the meantime I want to enhance myself and to do projects with other people. People from the field of design, but more likely people from the theatre or film, architecture or technology.
I basically will be working in two directions. On the on hand I will continue working on an experimental basis. That means in the first place to further develop my current collection – especially when it comes to presentation. There are so many posibilities to make my collection more understandable or maybe more vivid. I could imagine to cooperate with someone to write a script based on my designs.
On the other hand I want to design a collection of wearable accessories based on my papercollection. Wether in collaboration with a fashion designer or on my own remains to be seen.
All these thing will resolve in the nearby future. What I do know is that I am going crazy if I cannot be productive.
//

Louise Body Wallprints

'Erotica'

'Harry's garden'

With these wallpapers from Louise Body you feel like in a movie from the twenties - 'Erotica' pictures drawings of Moulin Rouge like dancers, while with Harry's Garden you get more the feeling of a conservatory. 'Tea, please, Albert' ' Yes, Madame'

Paris, Paris

I have to admit I have never been to Paris yet! It is on the top top of two of my wish lists:

  1. 'places i'd like to go' and
  2. 'places i'd like to go with my sweetheart and just be in love' (which means - besides making it - eat at nice little restaurants and stroll hand in hand through the city plus a little shopping on the side).

'Je t'aime' is a lamp by Pierre Gonalons - actually it is more than a lamp it is a declaration of love to the city of love!

This one is called 'sunrise'.

Très jolie, n'est pas?

Sarah Cihat gives old plates a new face - she reglazes and refires old or rejected plates and doing so they get a new life. They are beautiful - I would hang them on my wall! I love how you still see the old decor through the new one.

FOOD? FOOD!

Maybe some of you already wondered 'why does she say this blog is also about food?' Well, to be honest: I am obsessed with food. I am passionate about fashion and everything - but I am kind of obsessed with food. With good food, that is. I love cooking and I can spend the whole day on thinking what to prepare next. When I started this blog I only thought it to be natural that it would be about food as well. But since I am not going to post recipes and show you what I had for breakfast, lunch or dinner, food related topics should also be a bit of art. And here we come to the point: it is hard to find something like that. Much easier I stumbled upon fashion related stuff. But in the meantime, I collected at least some material about food+design+art.
To begin with I picked out the best food design material ever: CHOCOLATE!

This one I found on my computer without any link - I just do not remember where I found it! Anyone who can help me out?

And now the shoes...

... as promised. Daphne Bikkers designed these shoes for her graduation at the Academy of Arts in Arnhem, The Netherlands in 2006. They are all handmade and she even made pairs. She designed her collection in the style of the collection of Antoine Peters graduation at the Fashion Institute Arnhem. In so doing she scored a) brilliant pictures and b) attention from very important fashion people who attend the graduation shows in Arnhem every year.

Very rarely you see cool shoes for men like these ones...

She now headed for London where she is doing her master degree in MA Fashion Footwear. That means we just have to wait a little more until her prototypes turn into buyable products.
To see more check out her profile at the Virtual Shoe Museum - which is worth a visit anyways.

just pop

Tado is a duo from the UK who do graphic design, illustration, animation, toy design and everything in between. I came across them when I was actually looking for wallpapers - they also made wallstickers.
When I visted their site (very cute btw) I found the follwoing in their portofolio. They did the wallprints for a fotoshoot for ELLE UK titled 'Tokyo Pop'.

I just love the whole styling.

They also used the vases of Jamie Hayon - I saw them last year on the IMM Cologne. They are just great and all the hype about him is justified.

Abfallaufwertung...

Generally I am not a big fan of recycling fashion or design, but some people just know how to do it!
I came across the works of Stuart Haygarth earlier, but since all that eco-discussing has started, I can put it in another context.

His chandelier is huge (150 cm diameter) and made from empty plastic bottles and containers and basically anything else that is kind of transparent.
When i was looking for other recycling artists/designers i came across this site: Superuse. Different artist or designers propose how to re-use stuff - or better how to give garbage a new meaning.
The follwoing two examples I liked most...

This is a bedroom in a former pipeline in an old industrial building. Click on the picture to see a bigger version (of course you did know that).
The Architects of Lot-ek did a good job restyling this bulding into a beautiful loft. Be sure to visit their website.

The other items are slightly smalller...
...old knives turned into bottle openers. They look so oldfashioned in a french way (cannot explain, but i know you understand). Made by cuttingupknives, unfortunately the website does not work - maybe you are lucky. But you can buy these via Pension für Produkte. A nice website btw.

There is a nice book of Superuse, too, by 010 publishers.

One of my favorite german designers are the girls from TALKING MEANS TROUBLE. Although I liked some pieces of their earlier collections better, I show you my favorites from their current collection.
